Multi-modal image registration by minimizing Kullback-Leibler distance between expected and observed joint class histograms

چکیده
In this paper, we present a new multimodal image registration method based on the a priori knowledge of the class label mappings between two segmented input images. A joint class histogram between the image pairs is estimated by assigning each bin value equal to the total number of occurrences of the corresponding class label pairs. The discrepancy between the observed and expected joint class histograms should be minimized when the transformation is optimal. Kullback-Leibler distance (KLD) is used to measure the difference between these two histograms. Based on the probing experimental results on a synthetic dataset as well as a pair of precisely registered 3D clinical volumes, we showed that, with the knowledge of the expected joint class histogram, our method obtained longer capture range and fewer local optimal points as compared with the conventional Mutual Information (MI) based registration method. We also applied the proposed method to 2D-3D rigid registration problems between DSA and MRA volumes. Based on manually selected markers, we found that the accuracies of our method and the MI-based method are comparable. Moreover, our method is more computationally efficient than the MI-based method.

Multi-modal Image Registration by Minimising Kullback-Leibler Distance
In this paper, we propose a multi-modal image registration method based on the a priori knowledge of the expected joint intensity distribution estimated from aligned training images. The goal of the registration is to find the optimal transformation such that the discrepancy between the expected and the observed joint intensity distributions is minimised. The difference between distributions is...
متن کاملLearning Based Non-rigid Multi-modal Image Registration Using Kullback-Leibler Divergence
The need for non-rigid multi-modal registration is becoming increasingly common for many clinical applications. To date, however, existing proposed techniques remain as largely academic research effort with very few methods being validated for clinical product use. It has been suggested by Crum et al. that the context-free nature of these methods is one of the main limitations and that moving t...
متن کاملRobust Multi-modal Image Registration Based on Prior Joint Intensity Distributions and Minimization of Kullback-Leibler Distance
Robust registration is essential for image-guided therapy as well as structural and functional analysis. In this work, we present a new method that can give superior robustness in multi-modal image registration. This method is based on the a priori knowledge of the joint intensity distributions between image pairs at different image resolutions and the Kullback-Leibler distance (KLD) similarity...
متن کاملMultiresolution Image Registration Based on Kullback-Leibler Distance
This paper extends our prior work on multi-modal image registration based on the a priori knowledge of the joint intensity distribution that we expect to obtain, and Kullback-Leibler distance. This expected joint distribution can be estimated from pre-aligned training images. Experimental results show that, as compared with the Mutual Information and Approximate Maximum Likelihood based registr...
متن کاملMulti-modal 3d Image Registration Using the Kullback-leibler Distance
In this paper we address the problem of multi-modal coregistration of medical 3D images. Several techniques for the rigid registration of multi-modal images have been developed; in one of those the Kullback-Leibler distance is used to align 2D-3D angiographic images [1]. In this paper we refine this technique and investigate its performance on the registration of pairs of 3D CT/US images. We te...
